Marko Milovanovic is an architect, writer and filmmaker. He designs spaces of and for dialogue, producing architecture as public language and public language as architecture. This happens through architecture, films, texts, objects, teaching and rooms in which people can think together. The forms change because the questions change. A conversation may become a journey. A journey may become a film. A film may require a conversation, a room, a screening or an installation. Or another journey. His Instagram feed is where this work is archived in real time.
Marko founded Mylomark Design, Production and Publishing in 2018 and incorporated it in 2026. It is the environment through which this kind of work is made and sent into the world.
In 2021, he founded Free School Of, an educational platform built around long-form conversation. It began with the thought that a good education might resemble listening to strangers on a train. Its archive contains conversations with architects, artists, filmmakers, writers, editors, curators, publishers, historians, critics and people who are not particularly categorisable. Conversation and deep listening are the only ways to learn anything meaningfully. Marko’s past interlocutors include Wolfgang Tillmans, Es Devlin, Yinka Shonibare, Marina Abramović and many others.
Marko is the author of The Architecture of Attention. The text asks how conditions are created for a creative work to enter public life. Attention, permission, money, institutions…
He wrote and directed Temptation of Influence, a feature documentary following the movement and misreading of architectural ideas between Andrea Palladio, Louis Kahn, Shane de Blacam and several generations of Irish architects. It premiered at the Royal Academy in London and was later presented at the Galway Film Fleadh and the Irish Film Institute.
His recent writing includes The Tint of Los Alamos for Flash Art Volumes and Ancient Grammar from the Aran Islands for Emergence Magazine.
He has written on politics, economics, culture, cities and landscape since 2008. He wrote extensively for major Serbian newspapers and magazines of record, including Danas, Vreme, NIN and Politika, before the latter’s takeover by the authoritarian governing regime.
Marko teaches at the Architectural Association and the Royal College of Art. At the AA, he leads the AA Practice Platform and the Architecture Through Media Forums. He also co-runs a design studio with Fearghus Raftery, which is his favourite job. They use film to renarrate landscapes and construct architecture in time. With their students, they travel to complex, multidimensional sites such as the US state of New Mexico.
Marko studied architecture at the Architectural Association in London and, as an architect, worked on many award-winning cultural, commercial and healthcare projects, including the Stirling Prize-nominated 100 Liverpool Street, the Pears Building at the Royal Free Hospital in Hampstead and the masterplan for Dubai Expo 2020, all with Hopkins Architects.
He has served as a trustee and Honorary Officer of the Architectural Association. He has lectured, collaborated or contributed as a guest critic at Harvard, Yale, Oxford, Pratt Institute and the University of Belgrade.
Marko’s projects and institutional collaborations have involved the Royal Academy of Arts, the Victoria and Albert Museum, the British School at Rome, the Holt/Smithson Foundation, the British Council, Arts Council Ireland, the Irish Film Institute, the Royal College of Art, the Architectural Association and others.
The work usually begins with a conversation involving looking, listening and returning.
